The sheer rock formation of Suicide Cliff is home to many endangered species and is a protected conservation area. Its unfortunate name derives from an event during World War II when the advancing Japanese executed a Banzai charge at the US Military. Saipan civilians jumped to their death to avoid being captured. Monuments here are a tribute to peace and those who lost their lives.
The area resounds with place names famously associated with the Pacific Theater -- Hara-Kiri Gulch, Paradise Valley, Hill 767 and Marpi Point. At 880 feet above sea level, the cliffs here overlook a roiling sea.
Head into Garapan Village, stopping at the American Memorial Park en route back to the ship.
Notes: Wear comfortable walking shoes.
