Holland America Line was thrilled to partner with Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to host 30 Junior Achievement of South Florida students aboard its ship, Rotterdam, earlier this month. The students came on board for exclusive behind-the-scenes tours showcasing careers in the cruise and maritime industry. This unique event aimed to ignite a passion for maritime careers by providing them with a firsthand look at different jobs within the cruise industry.
Prior to boarding the ship, the students had the opportunity to hear from a panel of Port Everglades leadership, who discussed their backgrounds and the various career opportunities offered at the port. This session provided valuable insights into the diverse roles and responsibilities that keep the port running smoothly and highlighted the importance of the maritime industry to the local community.
“We are grateful to Holland America Line for the opportunity to showcase our port and the various professions available on land and at sea,” said Port Everglades CEO and Port Director Joseph Morris. “Our partnership goes back nearly a century, and we’re both invested in developing the next generation to lead the way for another 100 years.”
Once onboard, the students embarked on an immersive tour of the ship, where they had the opportunity to meet dedicated crew members and explore key areas of Rotterdam. These included visits to the bridge, the engine control room, the galley, and the main public areas, providing them with a comprehensive look at the inner workings of a cruise ship.
After touring the ship, the students took part in a Q&A session with the ship's officers, who offered valuable insights into the various career paths on a cruise ship. The students also enjoyed lunch in the ship's Lido Market, where they sampled a variety of the culinary creations Holland America Line prides itself on.
