You'll take the mountain road from Praia da Vitoria to Serra do Cume. Stop here for photos of the beautiful scenery -- a patchwork of small farms, stone walls and forests in harmony with nature.
From the viewpoint on Mount Brasil, take in the protected landscape vista that is among the most beautiful sights of the Azores.
Continue to Angra do Heroísmo -- the City of Lords. Urban development here dates back to the 16th century, and the houses and buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries remain astonishingly intact. The City of Lords was the capital of Terceira for 300+ years and was an important trade and travel hub, standing at the three-point intersection between Europe, Africa and the Americas. The City of Lords has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Don't miss the Sé Cathedral, Paços do Concelho and Praça Velha.
You'll also visit São Sebastião -- a village on the east coast. São Sebastião is best known for its charming church, which features Manueline portals and late-medieval frescoes.
Returning to the ship, your last stop is at Miradouro do Facho -- the balcony of Praia -- with spectacular views down the long beach of Praia Bay, the bustling pier and the fishing harbor.
Notes:
Visibility from the viewpoints is weather permitting. All Angra do Heroísmo visits are outside only. Participants must negotiate uneven cobblestone sidewalks and several steps at Angra do Heroísmo, and a few steps at Monte Brasil and in São Sebastião. Total walking required is about 1,200 yards. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
