America's second day of infamy, September 11, is memorialized in a poignant and informative museum at the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan. The Memorial itself, also on site, is a place to reflect on the events and contemplate the lives changed and lost on that fateful day.
A drive from Midtown Manhattan brings you to the 9/11 Memorial Museum entrance. You will have approximately two hours to explore the museum independently. A growing collection of diverse materials includes artifacts, photographs, audio and video tapes, personal effects and memorabilia, expressions of tribute and remembrance, recorded testimonies and digital files related to the history of the World Trade Center, the events of September 11, 2001, and February 26, 1993, and their repercussions.
Walk to the 9/11 Memorial. The two massive reflecting pools are set within the original footprints of the Twin Towers, with 30-foot waterfalls cascading down their sides. The names of the 2,982 men, women and children killed in both events are inscribed in bronze on parapets around the edges of the waterfalls. You will have approximately one hour to contemplate the memorial. It is set at the base of One World Trade Center, New York's tallest building.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes.
