More than 12 million immigrants were processed at Ellis Island and more than 40 percent of Americans can trace some part of their ancestry back to this gateway to America. The island and the famous Statue of Liberty together symbolize New York and encapsulate the ethos of American society -- e pluribus unum.
Your excursion begins with a drive to Battery Park at the southern tip of Manhattan.
Board a public ferry and cross New York Harbor, with views that include the city, Staten Island, New Jersey and the gorgeous skyline in the distance.
Upon arrival at Liberty Island, walk around the base of the magnificent, larger-than-life Statue of Liberty (exterior visit only). Visit the gift shop and view some of the interpretive exhibits.
Ellis Island was the main immigration center for the United States from 1892 until World War II. Today, it is an exceptional museum detailing all the different aspects of immigration and its effects on a growing and industrializing nation. Many people have used the Resource Room to research ancestors and the vessels on which they arrived. You'll have approximately 90 minutes on your own to explore the museum, visit the gift shop and café.
The ferry ride back to Battery Park offers another chance to snap iconic photos.
Notes:
Participants must pass through an airport-style security check before boarding the ferry. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
