The holy trinity of surf, sun and shopping beckons with an inviting all-day excursion to Maspalomas Beach. You can set your own itinerary and have time to explore the town at your leisure. The choices are endless, from walks along the golden beach, go for a swim, hunt for souvenirs or find a quiet spot and watch the day slip by. Just don’t forget to bring along a swimsuit and towel, a hat, comfortable shoes, adequate sun protection and a camera to record the day’s fun and activities.
Your day begins with an hour-long drive along the coast to the southernmost tip of Gran Canaria in your comfortable air-conditioned motorcoach. Sit back and relax as the blue ocean waters slip right past your window. After you arrive in Gran Canaria’s largest tourist town, you’ll disembark and begin your own agenda. If hitting the beach is foremost on your mind, you’re just steps away from a gentle coastline boasting sand dunes, wide sandy beaches, and crystal clear waters. Feel free to dive in, stretch out a towel and unwind or take a walk and visit Faro de Maspalomas, a 125-year-old lighthouse. Reaching a height of more than 210 feet, this towering figure still serves as a beacon for seafaring ships sailing through Spanish waters.
From here you can make your way to Charca de Maspalomas, a small coastal saltwater lagoon separated from the sea by a sandbank, making it an excellent haven for seabirds. Grab your camera because you may spot protected birds, as well as little egrets and Eurasian spoonbills as they feed on insects and fish.
By now, you’ve probably worked up an appetite. Restaurants and cafés in Maspalomas offer a wide variety of international cuisines. And, of course, Canarian specialties like ropa vieja, made with chicken and beef mixed with potatoes and garbanzo beans and a salted fish dish called sancocho are two popular options.
After a day of fun in the sun, you’ll rejoin the motorcoach and share memories and photos with your fellow travelers on the return trip to port.
