Las Palmas has a long maritime history. Founded in 1478 by Spanish conquistadors, it was the provisioning stop for Columbus on all four of his voyages, and later became the main stopping point on the transatlantic route.
Who would have thought that century’s later Las Palmas would be a popular destination for kayakers?
Maybe Columbus and the conquistadors never thought that the yearly average 73°F degree water coupled with never-ending sunshine would beckon people from around the world. Soak up this treasured seascape for yourself during a two-and-a-half-hour kayak adventure.
Whether you’re a novice or a pro, you’re sure to appreciate discovering picturesque Las Palmas from a completely different point of view.
Since you’ll be out on the water, it’s important to be comfortable so to prepare for your unforgettable excursion, make sure to bring a towel and wear a swimsuit under your clothes (or bring a change of clothes), a hat, sunglasses and adequate sun protection. Bring a camera along, too, to capture each memorable moment.
Your aquatic adventure begins with a walk from the pier to the nearby Playa de Las Alcaravaneras, the ocean front playground that faces Puerto de la Luz.
The calm water and spacious golden beach makes it a perfect place to meet your expert and knowledgeable guide. No experience is necessary, your guide will give you directions on how to properly handle your kayak, use your paddles, how to enter and exit the kayak and how to easily reach a good speed with little effort.
After your instructional briefing and lesson, you’ll don your safety jacket and be assigned to a one or two man kayak.
Then, your guide will lead you to the warm and crystal-clear water and paddle out along the golden shoreline of Alcaravaneras Beach, which stretches out over 1,800 feet long and about 278 feet wide.
As you paddle you’ll immediately notice that the sandy seafloor slopes away gradually into the deeper water. Waves are quite rare in Puerto de la Luz and are usually smooth-as-glass, which allows you one opportunity after another to admire the views and to take photos.
Out on the water, you’ll have a total of 90 minutes to soak up the sun, feel the breeze on your face and gaze at the spectacular sights that line the shore. The University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has a kayak training center here so you may see students practicing their competitive skills.
Humans aren’t the only visitors here. Dolphins like to play tourist, too and you may be lucky enough to catch one of these amazing creatures out in the inviting waters before turning your kayak back to shore.
Back on dry land, you’ll towel off and walk back to your ship or you can relax on the sand or walk along the promenade and plan your next adventure.
