In this land of hydrangeas and hot springs, green silence and cliffside contemplation, it is easy to believe the legend that the nine islands of the Azores are all that remain of the lost continent of Atlantis.
Board a motor coach for a panoramic drive that takes you first to the belvedere (viewpoint) at Espalamaca for views of the port and the charming town of Horta. Visitors are often reminded by nature that, in the Azores, they might experience four seasons in one day.
The road ascends 3,000 feet to the vast volcanic crater in the center of the island. This caldera is more than a mile in diameter and 1,200 feet deep, surrounded by some of the most luxuriant vegetation imaginable.
Continuing westward, you'll pass the typical Azorean villages of Ribeira Funda, Praia do Norte, and Norte Pequeño, and catch a magnificent view of Capelinhos, the volcano that rose from the sea in 1957.
