Recife is the capital of northeastern Brazil and is known as the Venice of Brazil because it is bisected by numerous waterways and crisscrossed by many bridges. Recife's deep cultural roots are noticeable. The city boasts five universities, as well as legions of art galleries and museums.
Enjoy a panoramic introduction to Recife en route to the Instituto Ricardo Brennard. This facility is housed in a medieval-style building and features a collection of weaponry and armor dating back to the Dutch colonial period.
At the Museum do Homen do Nordeste, discover Brazil's most complete colonial museum with a sociological and anthropological section. Pieces on display cover the sugar plantation period, the Northeastern peoples, and handicrafts and art -- both religious and secular.
