A day trip to Valdes Peninsula is an unforgettable experience. You’ll stop en route at the Visitor Center at the park entrance. This is the ideal place to learn about this natural reserve’s endemic flora and fauna.
Then, head to the wildlife reservation of Punta Norte to see colonies of sea elephants and sea lions in their natural habitat. Unusual geographic features conspire to provide the ideal topography for the proliferation of several endemic botanical and zoological species.
Every year, hundreds of whales cruise the southern seas to seek shelter in the still waters of the Nuevo and San José Gulfs during their breeding season (August to December). Thousands of elephant seals roam along miles of beach on the east side of the peninsula. Rocks, sand and gravel create the ideal habitat for these animals.
Time permitting, you’ll stop at Puerto Piramides -- a small fishing village facing the sea, with a handful of small hotels and restaurants and a pleasant beach. Before crossing the Ameghino Isthmus, you’ll pass Bird Island -- a sanctuary that offers shelter to an immense variety of bird species.
A boxed lunch is provided.
Notes:
Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. For a higher chance of sightings, the tour operator reserves the right to visit the Caleta Valdes Wildlife Reserve instead of Punta Norte. Due to Puerto Madryn’s remote location, the standard of transportation used may be more basic than that in some other ports. Tour is available only on select sailings. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf.
