Cross the Rio Negro by riverboat and head into Lake January, where you will board a covered canoe with an outboard motor and cruise through the dark and exciting jungle. Nighttime is when the jungle really comes to life. Watch the shadows and listen to the mysterious sounds.
Your guide will watch for alligators and, as he locates one, will jump into the water and catch it with his bare hands. You then will have the opportunity for an up-close look and can take some pictures before the gator is released, none the worse for wear, back into the river.
Notes:
Minimum age is 5 years. Shade is limited and temperatures are always high; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Bring a light, waterproof outer layer. Tour involves some effort during (dis)embarkation of the motorized canoe. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. The water level in the Amazon basin fluctuates seasonally. Tours involving these waterways may occasionally be rescheduled/modified at very short notice. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
