Leave Coquimbo via the coastal promenade, heading toward La Serena to view its iconic lighthouse.
Turning inland, you’ll head for the Elqui Valley. This is a narrow but fertile strip of land in the middle of an Andean mountainous desert. It is irrigated by the Elqui River, whose water comes from the mountain. Elqui boasts the clearest atmosphere in the world, making it a favorite among astronomers. Driving along the valley, watch for typical villages such as Algarrobito, El Molle, and El Tambo.
You will visit a Pisco distillery to learn about the making of this National Drink, which is produced and bottled in this region. Visit the cellars and exhibition room, followed by a tasting.
The picturesque town of Vicuña is where literature Nobel Prize winner Gabriela Mistral was born. Take some time to visit the main square, view the Bauer Tower (the former City Hall), and Vicuña’s church. Browse at the local handicrafts market.
Refreshments are served before you return to Coquimbo.
Notes:
