Enjoy a scenic sightseeing tour of the Amazon’s gateway city – Belem.
Founded by the Portuguese as a fortress to defend the Amazon estuary from the Dutch became an important city in the flourishing spice trade in the 18th century and the rubber boom in the 19th century. Today, the colonial and republican architecture, the leafy squares along with its fascinating history makes Belem an interesting place to discover.
Leaving the Pier, pass by the Ver-O-Peso Market which is always one of the most popular sites for visitors coming to Belém. Located on the waterfront, this market brings together hundreds of vendors.
Continuing on, your sightseeing will be pass by the Cathedral da Se and the Forte Do Presepio.
You will then head towards the heart of the city passing by Emilio Goeldi Park dedicated is in the studies of Amazonia fauna and flora.
Pass by the Basilica of Nazareth. Built during the rubber boom time in the early 20th century, the Basilica is an elaborate copy of St Paul’s Basilica in Rome. The Basilica has joined hundreds and thousands of devout people to the religious festivals for over 200 years, for the praying of the promises made to the virgin saint.
Your final sight will be Da Paz Theater – a work of architectural grace as beautiful as any aria ever sung upon its stage.
