To get a feel for everyday life in Belém, visit the main cultural monuments of the city, including the Da Paz Theater -- considered one of the prettiest in Brazil. It is built in neo-Classical style and was opened in 1878. You will also see the Museum of Sacred Arts, formed by the architectural ensemble of the Church of Saint Alexander and the Episcopal Palace. It shelters fantastic works of religious art.
The Fortress Museum holds ceramic pieces that show the arrival of the European colonizers in the region during the 17th century.
The São José Liberto former jail is now a handicrafts market, and the Jeweler Polo Gems Museum displays more than 4,000 pieces with diamonds, quartz, crystals and amethysts.
Notes:
Traffic can be unpredictable. The driver will do his/her best to keep moving safely. Your patience is greatly appreciated. Delays occasionally extend tour duration. If the ship is docked at Belém (rather than anchored at Icocracy), tour duration is reduced by approximately 1.5 hours. Depending on the humidity, biting or stinging insects may be present -- bring insect repellent. Not recommended for guests who are allergic to insect stings.
