A ride through the mangroves is like visiting another world. Transfer 25 minutes from the pier to a place that is ideal for boarding a riverboat. As you explore from a waterside perspective, your guide will tell you about this special habitat.
Mangroves grow best in brackish waters, where the ocean and river meet, creating a very fragile ecosystem. They develop an aerial root system -- as the tide goes out, the roots are exposed to the air, creating a perfect hiding place for small crabs and large crocodiles.
In the upper canopy of the forest that lines the shore, you will see monkeys and a great variety of birds, including herons, egrets, and spoonbills, among others.
Keep a sharp eye out as your naturalist guide identifies any shoreside wildlife and points out the creatures that lurk in the water beneath you.
Enjoy some delicious refreshments before returning to the village and heading back to the ship by coach. Guests wishing to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so but must make their own way back to the ship.
Notes:
Tour schedule and duration are subject to tidal conditions and may vary. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
