Board air-conditioned transportation for a guided 2½-hour panoramic drive through the scenic countryside of Guatemala. You're headed to the Mayan site of Iximche — a late post-classic archeological site in the western highlands. Iximche was the capital of the Kaqchikel Maya from AD 1470 until it was abandoned in 1524.
Upon arrival, you will tour the site on foot as your guide provides relevant information about the structures and the relevance of Mayan cosmology and how that relates to our modern calendar. You might also be lucky enough to witness, from a distance, an authentic Mayan ritual. These are performed regularly on the site but are not officially part of your visit.
Head to a nearby local restaurant for a much-deserved lunch before returning to the pier, where your tour will end.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes; bring sunglasses, a hat, biodegradable sunscreen and insect repellent. Elevation is more than 7,000 feet above sea level. Eat a substantial breakfast before the tour. Bring a light jacket for colder weather and/or rain.
