Experience an up-close look at one of Guatemala's active volcanoes during this rigorous, full-day guided hike suited to those who enjoy challenging uphill terrain.
An air-conditioned panoramic drive brings you to Pacaya National Park -- home of the majestic 8,371-foot Pacaya Volcano. After meeting your certified guides, begin the three-hour trek up the active volcano through forests and meadowlands that eventually give way to volcanic sand and rock. Pacaya is an active volcano, and the smell of sulfur will likely be quite pungent as you reach a platform near the top of the volcano. Have your camera ready for panoramic snaps of the surrounding mountains.
At the top of your ascent, it's time to take a break and enjoy a beverage and a snack. The one-hour descent is less demanding in a cardiovascular sense but more demanding on balance and joints. As you descend, contemplate the rare beauty you have witnessed on your volcano adventure.
Notes:
You will be hiking on the active Pacaya volcano, which last erupted in 2021; participate at your own risk. How far up the volcano you hike will be determined on the day at the tour operator's discretion. Minimum age is 12 years. Maximum weight is 250 lbs. Participants must be in good physical condition. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is very steep uphill hiking over an unpaved, rough, rocky trail with many steps. A steep descent is required to return to the coach -- this requires balance and healthy joint (hip and knee) function. Wear sturdy hiking shoes. The temperature is likely to be hot. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Not suitable for guests with neck, back, knee or hip conditions. Waiver must be signed and medical conditions disclosed. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations.
