Depart the pier for a scenic 90-minute, narrated drive through the Guatemalan countryside to the colonial capital of Antigua. From your comfortable air-conditioned coach, you'll notice the coastal scenery of cattle farms and sugar plantations morph into volcanic landscapes as you approach the city, which is perched at 5,000 feet above sea level. Along the way, your knowledgeable guide will provide detailed information about the landmarks you see.
Upon arrival at this colonial jewel of the Americas, you will first visit Central Park, where the cathedral and Government Palace are located. Step into the Church and Convent of La Merced.
Lunch is served at Casa Santo Domingo -- a restored convent that now houses a five-star hotel and cultural center. It also contains several small modern and colonial art exhibits, candles and ceramics, and handicrafts.
At the famous Jade Museum & Factory, learn how fine jadeite jade is transformed into works of art. This type of jade is found mainly in Guatemala and Burma. You will learn about jade and its place in Mayan history. Enjoy some free time to purchase jade jewelry before heading back to the pier in Quetzal.
Notes:
