The Guacalillo Estuary is noted for its mangrove forests. In fact, four different species of mangrove are found in this area -- a group of unrelated woody plants that grow on protected tropical coasts. The mangrove is also an excellent habitat for many endemic birds, such as the mangrove cuckoo, mangrove hummingbirds, mangrove vireo, Panama flycatcher and many herons and egrets. This particular mangrove forest is one of the most important on the mid-Pacific Coast for conserving the scarlet macaw.
Enjoy a boat ride on board a comfortable, open-sided pontoon boat designed to bring you closer to nature. Crocodiles and iguanas are easily spotted. Admire the giant crocodiles in their natural habitat and keep an eye out for the several species of tropical birds in the beautiful world of the mangroves. A specialist birder guide shares avian information on board.
Back on land, continue to El Jardín for a gentle stroll through the butterfly garden.
Then, unwind with a buffet of fresh tropical fruits, natural juices, and Costa Rican coffee. You'll also have time to browse for souvenirs before heading back to the pier.
