Stroll through the picturesque streets of Colonia del Sacramento, the oldest city in Uruguay. Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995, Colonia was founded by the Portuguese in 1680.
Today, the Old Town has much to say about its colonial past. The streets of Santa Rita, San Gabriel, Matriz Church, San Pedro Road, Bastion del Carmen and the famous Street of Sighs are often used as a backdrop for historical films. These landmarks lie among the city’s cobblestone alleys. Colonia’s pure, natural setting on the River Plate complements its archaeological value.
After the city tour, enjoy an exquisite lunch at the local Meson de la Plaza restaurant before heading back to Montevideo.
Notes:
Travel time from Montevideo is 2¼ hours each way. No inside visits are included. One hour of walking is required. The streets are paved with cobblestones and, therefore, can be uneven.
