Discover the Aviarios del Caribe Sloth Sanctuary of Costa Rica -- a premier attraction made famous on the popular Animal Planet Meet the Sloths series. You’ll get acquainted with the marvelous, if sedate, world of the sloth less than an hour from Puerto Limon.
Meet members of the inspiring Arroyo family -- founders of the only non-profit sloth sanctuary and research center in Costa Rica. You’ll learn about the important research work done here. Seeing these enigmatic animals up close is a chance to learn more about their living habits and unique personalities, their individual stories and the hope that their rescuers have for their future. Their perpetually-smiling faces are adorable, and you’ll be amused by their antics as they (very) slowly draw you into their charming universe.
Next, board a canoe for a ride along the freshwater Estrella River -- one of the largest rivers on the Caribbean Coast. The odds of seeing wild sloths, howler monkeys, birds and other wildlife are very high. Within the bayou country of the river delta, many bird species have been identified, and it is also home to coatis, otters, turtles and countless butterflies. Keep your eyes open and your camera ready.
Conclude with a visit to the gift shop, where you can browse for a souvenir to remind you of this very special day before returning to port. An educational tour for all ages and all proceeds from the gift shop directly fund the Sloth Sanctuary’s mission.
Notes:
Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Wear comfortable clothing; bring a sunhat and rain gear as you will be traveling in an open-air canoe along the Estrella River. Wear sturdy, closed-toe walking shoes. The sloths are kept at a distance and not available for you to touch or hold so that they can be returned to the wild environment when they are ready. Flash photography is not allowed. Minimum age is 3 years.
