Outdoor enthusiasts will relish the opportunity to spend the entire day in the tropical paradise found just outside of Limón. Tortuguero Canals and the Veragua Rainforest, home to the Foundation for Rainforest Research, are your destinations on this fascinating adventure.
At 46,000-acre Tortuguero National Park -- home to the magnificent Tortuguero Canals -- hop aboard a motorboat. Sit back and relax for a gentle ride along the canals as your knowledgeable naturalist guide points out the astonishing flora and fauna. Keep your eyes peeled -- as you drift past beautiful orchids and water lilies, you may see crocodiles, spider monkeys, jaguars, river otters, manatees or any of the 300 bird species, 57 amphibian species, 111 different kinds of reptile, and 60 mammal species.
Enjoy a snack of seasonal fruit before venturing on to your next destination.
Travel south to the Veragua Rainforest Eco-Adventure -- a land-based world of extraordinary natural beauty. At the Reptile Habitat, you’ll see endemic iguanas, lizards and snakes. The Frog Habitat houses unique environments for diurnal and nocturnal frogs, and the Butterfly Garden comes alive with hundreds of the world’s most colorful butterflies, including the brilliant blue morpho.
After a delicious buffet lunch, board the Veragua Rainforest Aerial Tram and marvel at the endless views during a ride through the pristine forest canopy. Keep watch for toucans and shy sloths, and listen for howler monkeys as you descend the mountain to the riverbank below.
Walk the Trail of the Giants (named for the gigantic trees that frame the path) or hike to the cascading 65-foot Puma Waterfall -- an outdoor enthusiast’s dream in a fascinating educational setting.
Gain an insider’s look at the laboratories where the biologists from the Foundation for Rainforest Research work to unlock nature’s mysteries, partnering with the University of Costa Rica.
You’ll have free time to browse in the gift shop before boarding the coach for the return to the ship.
