Travel to a century-old, family-owned plantation in the hills of Turrialba. Tayutic Hacienda belongs to the Ortuño family, whose wealth comes from the production of sugarcane and coffee.
En route, you will take in the wonderful views of the valley, the magnificent Reventazón River, the impressive dam, and the endless fields that dot the landscape. This is a region blessed with exuberant tropical forests that harmoniously inhabit this area along with sugarcane, coffee plantations and tropical flowers.
Upon arrival at the hacienda, you'll learn about the ancient methods of growing and processing sugarcane. And an introduction to coffee cultivation affords an insight into the process of growing, harvesting and roasting your favorite beverage. You'll be invited to participate in a coffee-tasting session.
After lunch, visit the picturesque colonial metal-and-wood chapel built in 1880 by German pilgrims.
An on-site shop offers the hacienda's products, such as coffee, organic sugarcane products, recipes and other locally-crafted keepsakes at factory prices.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Travel time to the hacienda is approximately two hours each way.
