Mexico's brilliantly colorful cultural traditions are reflected in the communities surrounding Huatulco.
In the small town of Piedra de Moros, you will learn all about medicinal plants and herbs. Take the walkway with your guide and listen as (s)he tells you the name and use of each plant and which conditions each one cures.
Taste a refreshing beverage made with lemongrass and see the traditional way of making tortillas and bread. The use of nopales (cacti) is also explained, and a sample of this traditional Mexican product is offered.
A five-minute ride brings you to the Community Textile Center. Meet fifth-generation artisans from Teotitlán del Valle who use the cactus bug to produce beautiful natural colors for thread-making. The thread they create is later used to weave beautiful pieces such as rugs, blankets, and clothing.
You will visit the 17th-century church of Santa Maria Huatulco. Don't miss the pictorial representation of the city's history painted on its walls.
The Municipal Palace boasts its own beautiful mural, depicting the transition from Old Huatulco to the contemporary town you see today and its varied geographical surroundings.
Ten minutes away, a rustic Mezcal factory is your next stop. The elaborate distillation process of Oaxaca's traditional beverage (almost as famous as tequila) is showcased here, along with many different uses of the maguey plant.
End your day back at the pier, taking home an impression of how small Mexican communities make their way in today's world.
