Transfer 45 minutes by air-conditioned van to Santa Maria Huatulco -- the municipal capital. Explore the historic 18th-century Catholic church and the old market.
Next, a 20-minute drive to an elevation of around 1,100 feet asl brings you to a 500-yard trail along a creek. This is the home of the Hagia Sophia (Sacred Wisdom) Project, designed to provide local farmers with innovative, more productive, and environmentally sustainable crop alternatives to traditional corn. In addition to cultivating local species, they have successfully introduced around 40 varieties of tropical flowers, including heliconias and gingers, as well as ornamental foliage such as palms and bamboo. They have also incorporated 30 different fruit varieties from various countries. One of the standout fruits featured in the project is the rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum). This exotic delicacy is as familiar to Southeast Asian countries -- Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Borneo -- as apples are in the Western Hemisphere. Stroll through an incredible display of flowers, foliage plants, and trees. Sample various seasonal fruits accompanied by refreshing beverages. The trail culminates at a picturesque peninsula formed by the river, where the horticulture greenhouse is situated. The estate is a natural wonder, teeming with a rich diversity of birds and butterflies. Time permitting, you can refresh yourself with a dip under the small waterfall (a natural jacuzzi).
