A Heart for Community
Connect with the heart and soul of a vibrant community. Whether you're meeting friendly locals, encountering heirloom cultures, engaging with Native peoples, exploring hidden corners, or discovering beloved eateries, let lasting memories begin with warmth, hospitality, and genuine connection.
Discover the heart of Oaxaca on this off-the-beaten-track excursion offering a glimpse of the ancestral cultural roots of Mexico. You'll head into the residential communities adjacent to the Huatulco resort area to get acquainted with local habits and customs.
Visit three small communities, stopping three times along the way at some local homes. Watch the process of hand-making tortillas and tamales, and discover a wide variety of edible and medicinal plants. You'll have time to shop for local crafts and souvenirs in each community.
At a low-growth jungle tree nursery, you'll learn about the cultivation of nopales. Nopales are a tasty cactus that also produces prickly pears. Try the cactus and its fruit (in season) in different preparation forms, including marmalades, soups, stews and salads.
The making of clay bricks is a fascinating process employed in Huatulco for hundreds of years. Watch as the bricks are molded, and take advantage of the opportunity to form one yourself. Add your signature to yours, and you'll remain a part of Mexico long after your vacation ends.
