Built at the beginning of the 17th century, the ancient La Popa Monastery offers a sweeping view of Cartagena. Step into the La Popa Church to see its ornate, 22-karat gold-leaf altar. Tranquility reigns outside in the flower-filled courtyard.
Take photos of the imposing San Felipe Fortress -- perhaps the most impregnable bastion on the Spanish Main.
As you walk through the Old Town -- Cartagena's Walled City -- with your guide, you will pause at many places along the way to contemplate the nearly 500 years of history surrounding you. View Saint Peter Claver Church and Plaza Bolívar -- the city's main square. With the cathedral on one side and the Inquisition Palace on the other, this plaza claims a prominent place in history.
The oldest fort of Cartagena was demolished during the siege of 1741, and the Pastelillo Fortress replaced it. Today, the fort is home to the Club de Pesca Restaurant, famous for its excellent view of the Old Town and the bay. Enjoy a delicious snack of Caribbean flavors with a contemporary twist.
