Travel by air-conditioned coach through Cartagena. Admire the district's beautiful Republican-style houses as you pass through the traditional residential neighborhood of Manga. Some have been painstakingly restored to their former glory. Take photos of the 1911 neo-Classical-style Heredia Theater, considered one of the most beautiful in South America.
Your walking tour starts in the San Francisco area and visits the Santiago bastions.
At Baloco Street, admire the charming colonial architecture of the area, and Plaza Bolívar, which features a statue of its namesake.
Visit the Inquisition Palace, once fully embroiled in all the nasty history its name evokes.
View the colonial mansions of Cartagena and walk past the cathedral and the Governor's Mansion -- headquarters of the Spanish government.
See the old commercial district, the Customs Plaza and San Pedro Claver Plaza with its church honoring the Patron Saint of Slaves, and continue to the dungeons (Las Bovedas), used as both military barracks and a munitions depot during colonial times.
You'll have 15 minutes to shop for souvenirs among local artisans displaying their art and handicrafts here.
Notes:
The visit to the bastions requires climbing a steep ramp. Tour includes extended periods of walking and standing in the Old Town. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
