Head to colonial Nahuizalco and visit the town's central plaza, church, artisan stalls and shops. Take time to browse here, shopping for indigenous handicrafts. Nahuizalco is an important center for the surrounding indigenous communities -- one of the last places where the Nahuat language is spoken. A massacre in 1932 significantly reduced the native population. Nowadays, their customs, traditions, heritage, and ceremonies are cultural treasures are protected and preserved by some of the few remaining pure-Nahuat descendants.
The local fruit market is bright, colorful and busy, offering a dance performance put on by the Nahuizalco municipality. Tap to the beat of the marimba music and admire petates made from natural fibers.
