Discover the Lake & Volcano Complex at Cerro Verde National Park. Cerro Verde is an inactive volcano, 6,676 feet (2,035 m) tall and surrounded by 12,000 acres of nature preserve. There is a cool cloud forest in and around the crater, with temperatures between 12 and 18 degrees centigrade.
Take in panoramic views of Izalco Volcano, often called the Lighthouse of the Pacific because its red glowing lava flow guided ships into Acajutla's port. Nearby, Santa Ana/Ilamatepec Volcano is the largest in the region. The beauty of the National Park is quite captivating and includes Lake Coatepeque, ranked among the ten most beautiful lakes in the world.
After you visit the National Park, head to Casa 1800 at the Cerro Verde Hotel for a delicious cup of coffee and a dessert. Use your free time to enjoy the surroundings before returning to the port at Acajutla.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water. Terrain is dusty, unpaved and uneven. Bring a jacket, as temperatures on the volcano are cool.
