Transfer to the eastern side of the walled city of Visby. Leave the coach and cross the short bridge over the dry moat to the medieval town center. Enter this UNESCO World Heritage Site city through the Dalmans Gate and walk through snug alleyways to the great viewpoint above the Cathedral built by German merchants at the end of the 11th century. The magnificent vista includes the sea, old houses and red rooftops and makes for postcard-like photos.
Walk downhill through winding, narrow lanes, passing church ruins and stately houses.
During the Middle Ages, Visby was an important seat of the emerging Hanseatic League -- a trade syndicate that dominated Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea. Many German merchants settled in Visby during this time and their influence is evident.
Passing the Big Square and the main street, you'll walk through the Fisherman's Gate to the serene Botanic Gardens. Roses and some rare exotic trees grow here thanks to the mild climate of Gotland.
End your walk at Almedalen -- the former medieval harbor that hosts the annual Political Week gathering of Swedish politicians.
Notes
Tour requires approximately two hours of walking. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Terrain includes cobblestones, uneven surfaces, inclines and steps.
