The Northern Lights, the green lady, aurora borealis — this fascinating phenomenon has many names. Northern Norway is famous for having the best conditions to see the Northern Lights, with stable weather, dark skies, and little light pollution.
Leave bustling Tromsø behind and head out on the fjord by boat. Far away from the city light, you'll have the best chance of spotting the Northern Lights. The route is planned each evening based on the weather forecast to give you the best chance of seeing the aurora.
The optimum conditions for viewing them (away from the city) are in darkness, with minimal light pollution, although the two most important factors are solar activity and clear skies. If you’re lucky enough to see nature’s favorite light show, it may take the form of faint wisps of color or dancing, shimmering curtains of light over the boreal forests and tundra.
Stand on deck and enjoy a hot coffee or tea. A small kiosk on board sells other hot and cold drinks and small snacks.
Notes:
Transfers to and from the boat are via the ship's shuttle bus. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon; the chances of spotting them are high, but sightings are not guaranteed. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair, for those with mobility limitations, or for those with a medical condition exacerbated by extreme cold. Bring a flashlight. Terrain includes a marine ramp from the pier to the boat, which can be very steep at low tide. Children under the age of 3 must be secured in a child's car seat on the transportation. These are not available through the tour operator; you must bring your own from home.
