If beaches are not the first thing that comes to mind when you picture Scotland, think again. Lewis and Harris -- two islands in the Hebrides -- boast white-sand beaches that rival those of the Caribbean.
From Stornoway, it's a scenic panoramic drive across the moorland heading to the north of Lewis, where lakes and rivers dominate the landscape. Your destination is the Butt of Lewis Lighthouse -- the northernmost point of the Island. Step off the coach into a bracing breeze -- this area is in the Guinness Book of Records for being the windiest place in the UK. Standing 121 feet (37m) tall, the lighthouse is surrounded by giant cliffs with spectacular views.
Take in the beautiful, rugged coastline scenery; then, head to Port of Ness Beach for free time to stroll the powdery sand, snap a few pictures, or purchase a snack at the café (at your own expense).
Notes
Terrain includes some areas that might be slippery and muddy. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer. Tour requires approximately 30 minutes of walking.
