Travel to the delightful village of Corfe. From the time dinosaurs roamed the area to the present day, nearly all periods of history are celebrated in and around the village, which is quite unequaled in the UK.
Visit the ruins of thousand-year-old Corfe Castle, majestically silhouetted against the skyline. One of Britain's most majestic and romantic ruins, Corfe features beautiful medieval architecture and dominates a breach in the Purbeck Hills. The castle was an important stronghold even before the time of William the Conqueror. Edward, the Saxon boy king, was murdered here in AD 978, and King John kept important prisoners and valuable treasures in the towers. Today, you are following in the footsteps of kings, knights, soldiers, workers, servants, and prisoners -- the hundreds of thousands of people who lived at, worked in, fought over or visited Corfe Castle during its thousand-year history.
Take a half hour to wander through the village of Corfe before commencing the return drive across the countryside to Southampton.
Notes:
Travel time to Corfe is approximately 75 minutes each way. There is a 15 minute walk from the coach parking area to reach the castle, some of which is on an incline. There are steep inclines and some difficult terrain within the castle itself. Corfe Castle's ruins are undergoing essential restoration work; some parts of the site are surrounded by scaffolding.
