Travel by motorcoach to the beautiful riverside town of Windsor and to the castle built by William the Conqueror in 1066. Outside the castle walls, the fortunes of the town have risen and fallen with the monarchy's interest in the castle. Windsor Castle is one of three official royal residences and it is there that the late Queen Elizabeth II felt most at home. It is the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest in continuous occupation.
Your visit today focuses on the castle's two most outstanding features -- the State Apartments and St George's Chapel.
The State Apartments boast painted ceilings, paneled walls, Adam fireplaces, classic furniture and priceless paintings and drawings. The Queen used this magnificent suite of ceremonial rooms to entertain visiting Heads of State.
St George's Chapel, one of the most beautiful religious buildings in England, was commissioned by King Edward IV in 1475. Built in the perpendicular Gothic style, it took 51 years to complete. Ten monarchs are buried here. You will leave via the Henry VIII Gateway, bearing Henry's Coat of Arms and that of his first wife, Catherine of Aragon.
Enjoy two hours of shopping or independent sightseeing in Windsor town. There are quaint Georgian shops, houses and inns to explore and don't miss the Guildhall on the High Street, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1689.
