Mt Beowulf (Bjólfur) is a majestic mountain rising above the town of Seyðisfjörður, reaching 3,560 feet (1,085 m) at its peak. Epic scenery deserves an epic name, so this mountain is named for the monster-slaying hero of the poem, Beowulf, believed to date back to the Dark Ages (c. AD 650 – 800). Oddly, this cornerstone work of English literature is based on Norse themes and set in Denmark.
Travel by modified 4x4 mountain bus uphill past a series of cascading waterfalls and heather-clad slopes to a plateau. Leave the transportation and walk along the winding track. You will reach a viewpoint offering sweeping, stupendous views of the fjords below; then, re-board the vehicle and descend the winding road back to the ship.
