Enjoy a leisurely, guided walking tour of Seyðisfjörður, considered the cultural center of eastern Iceland. Situated on a winding 10-mile-long fjord, this charming little village of only 650 souls is completely surrounded by mountains. To the west, you can see Mt Bjólfur rising 3,559 feet, and across from the port is a lovely waterfall, just one of many that dot the area.
Seyðisfjörður is renowned for its impressive, yet simple, architecture. As you walk through the narrow streets, you’ll pass many well-preserved and brightly painted wooden structures. These homes, businesses and public buildings were imported from Norway in kitset form between 1895 and 1922. View the striking blue church -- immortalized in the movie The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. It is now the local cultural center and features modern art exhibitions.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Terrain includes several steps and inclines.
