From Runavík, you'll drive north along Skálafjord, passing idyllic villages and heading through the tunnel to the west side of Eysturoy.
The village of Eidi is beautifully scenic and from there you'll cross the mountains to Gjógv. On the way, you're treated to a view of the Giant and the Hag -- two very distinctive sea stacks. You'll also pass the highest mountain in the Faroe Islands, Slættaratindur (2,893 feet).
In Gjógv, you'll find a gorge 616 feet long, which forms a natural harbor for fishing boats. Walk the many steps down the gorge or take a short walk out to the cliff edge with a fantastic scenic view of the island of Kallsoy. You'll also have time to visit the small church here.
Return to Runavík via the mountain road, down past the village of Funning. It is said that Grímur Kamban lived here. According to the Færeyinga Saga, written in AD 1200, this man was the first settler in the Faroe Islands, arriving at the beginning of the 9th century.
