Welcome to Rønne -- the capital of Bornholm with approximately 14,000 inhabitants. Your guide will meet you at the pier and you will set out on foot to explore the secrets and charms of Rønne. The town dates back about 700 years and boasts many exceptionally fine half-timbered houses. Nestled between them you will find 'bomb-houses' -- brick houses built to replace those that were bombed by the Russians in 1945 after the Germans refused to surrender the island. Sweden donated 300 wooden houses to help rebuild and most of these are still used as homes today. Sweden and Bornholm haven't always been friendly -- in 1658 Danish freedom fighters shot the island's Swedish commander and returned the territory to the Danish king. You will see the memorial column today.
Walk the winding cobblestone streets of the Old Town and feel the atmosphere of Rønne as you pass the oldest theatre in Denmark, dating back to1823.
Notes:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Guests who wish to stay in town to shop or explore independently are welcome to do so, but must make their own way back to the ship.
