Riga may be the largest and most cosmopolitan city in the Baltic, but it still takes great pride in its heritage and beauty.
Board an air-conditioned motorcoach and wind your way through the charming streets of Riga to the outskirts of the city. Nestled in a pine forest near the banks of Lake Jugla, the Latvian Open-Air Ethnographic Museum is one of the oldest and largest open-air museums in Europe. You'll feel as if you've stepped back in time. Take a look around and you'll see more than 100 buildings dating from the 17th century to the 1930s, painstakingly recreated and tucked among the woods and rolling hills. Your guide leads you past quaint windmills, charming churches, pastoral homesteads and a school. While walking, you may see horse-drawn carriages trot by, and smithies, potters and other craftspeople working with time-honored techniques and traditional equipment.
A Latvian folklore group meets you at the gate of Vidzeme Court and entertains you with some typical Latvian dance and folk costumes.
Then, you are free to venture out on your own to explore the museum further before boarding the motorcoach for the return trip to Riga.
Heading back to the harbor, you'll feel a deeper appreciation of this magical land as you journey past picturesque towns and villages, historic landmarks and attractions.
Notes:
The Open-Air Museum is in the forest. Participants must negotiate gravel paths and inclines. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
