Today's great adventure begins at the pier as you board a larger-than-life modified super-truck. Head out to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Thingvellir, where you will stop among the landscape of Iceland's early parliament before delving into its majestic hinterland.
Drive along the dramatic Cold Valley to Langjokull Glacier. Langjokull (Long Glacier) is 4,460 feet long and covers an area of about 366 square miles, approximately 4,000 feet above sea level.
Upon arrival at the glacier, it's all action, and your expert driver will take your super-truck adventure to the next level. This involves a once-in-a-lifetime journey over the ice and snow to the Ice Cave -- a new attraction on the flanks of Iceland's second-largest glacier. The Ice Cave is a manmade cave that stretches deep into the glacier and consists of tunnels and caves carved through solid glacier ice. Crevasses that pull the glacier apart and sunlight penetrating the packed ice are among the natural wonders you'll see. A cave-like tunnel leads into the icy underground, and as the ice gets older, the color changes from white to a magnificent deep blue. The Ice Cave is about 100 feet below the glacier's surface and stretches approximately 800 feet in length.
During your guided glacier visit, you'll enjoy an introduction to glaciology and learn about climate change's effect on glaciers. The cave also allows glaciologists, meteorologists and other scientists to study the glacier in a new way.
Head back to the woodlands of Húsafell to your lunch destination.
After lunch, you will drive to the nearby Hraunfoss and Barnafoss waterfalls -- two of Iceland's most picturesque cascades.
The ride back to Reykjavík will take you through the Hvalfjordur Tunnel, along the coastline and back to the pier.
Notes:
The vehicles ride in a convoy formation; commentary may be provided through the vehicle's radio system. Tour operates rain or shine but may be canceled by the operator in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Heavy rains can cause icing on the glacier, preventing the super-4x4 from driving all the way to the Ice Cave; in this event, guests may be asked to switch to glacier super-trucks that drive to the ice cave. Suitable only for guests who are physically fit. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking. Minimum age is 8 years. Pregnant women are not allowed to participate. Not suitable for guests with back or neck conditions. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Wear sturdy, non-skid walking shoes. The ice cave operator provides crampons and boots. The ice cave is very wet in some areas, with water dripping from above. The vehicles ride high; participants must be able to (dis)embark the vehicle without assistance.
