A short drive from Dover brings you to Walmer Castle (1539), seat of the Lord Warden lineage since 1708. Once an imposing bastion of defense, the castle is now a rather comfortable residence, and was visited frequently by the late Queen Mother who was the Lord Warden until her death in 2002.
You will be able to visit the garden created to mark the Queen Mother’s 95th birthday and you will also see the sections of the castle used during her visits, including her drawing room and dining room. An audio guide is available to enhance your visit.
Nearby is the town of Sandwich, a labyrinth of medieval winding streets brimming with gateways, churches and houses. But Sandwich’s true claim to fame is surely the invention of the sandwich. Legend has it that the 4th Earl of Sandwich, an avid gambler, asked for his meal to be brought to him at the gaming table, handily packaged up to provide maximum dexterity so he could continue playing while eating. His cook devised a piece of meat between two slices of bread, and with that simple request, history was made and the culinary repertoire of the Western World was forever altered.
You will have some free time in Sandwich to browse or wander the ancient streets, before re-boarding your motor coach for a scenic drive through Kent’s countryside as you return to Dover.
