Enjoy a coastal drive by coach, heading south of Skagen. Watch for Bangsbofort in Frederikshavn -- part of a defensive complex set up by the Germans during World War II.
Continue along the coast before you reach the incredible Voergaard Manor -- keeper of the scariest ghost stories in Denmark and a slightly more user-friendly private collection of French art and artifacts.
Upon arrival, step behind its yard-thick walls, meet your specialist guide and enjoy a guided tour through the castle -- a rich treasure trove that reveals 16th-century life in great detail.
You will find yourself walking in the footsteps of Knights Templar, Kings of Denmark, and perhaps more than a few ghosts; your guide will point out a bloodstain that simply cannot be washed off. You’ll also see a wonderful world of priceless art treasures and royal antiques -- a collection of furniture, antiques, paintings, porcelain and silverware, including treasures from Louis XIV, Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette’s personal effects, as well as works by Rubens, Raphael, Goya and El Greco.
Most of the castle’s extensive art collection comes from the Lafitte and Oberbech-Clausen families, acquired shortly after the French Revolution.
Notes:
Photography is not permitted inside the manor. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring an umbrella.
