Occupied Northern Denmark played an important role in the huge defense system ordered by Hitler in 1942, later called the Atlantic Wall. The coast of continental Europe and Scandinavia was fortified as the Germans anticipated an invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe from Great Britain during World War II.
This tour will take you to Bangsbo Fort, set up by the Germans during World War II to defend the port of Frederikshavn. The museum displays the conditions under which German soldiers, stationed in the bunker, lived. Bangsbo Fort was further developed by the Danish Navy during the Cold War. It consists of 80 concrete plants and multiple guns are still standing in their originally bunkers. The museum narrates how the bunkers were transformed as the Danish Navy took over and reinforced the structure to play a role in the Cold War.
From here, the tour continues to the Resistance Museum. This museum tells the captivating story of the Danish Resistance Movement and how it cooperated with the British Special Operations Executive, whose purpose was to conduct espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance throughout occupied Europe. You'll also learn a great deal about the Danes' quiet contribution to Allied victory and about everyday life here during World War II.
Notes:
The entrance to the bunker is small. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. It is cold inside the bunker; bring a jacket.
