Leave the pier for a delightful introduction to the charming town of Skagen -- a favorite with Danes and visitors alike. Located in the northernmost part of Denmark, Skagen is a fishing town with a busy harbor.
You're headed to the Raabjerg Mile -- the largest sand dune in the area and the longest migrating dune in Denmark. It's about .6 miles wide and, despite its name, only about .6 miles long. However, it covers about 37 million square and is 154 feel tall. Each year the dune moves around 15 yards closer to Grenen at the top of Denmark.
Don't miss the Buried Church -- the Church of St Laurence, who was the seafarer's patron saint. When it was built in the 14th century, it was the largest church in northern Jutland.
The sand migration began in the 16th century and reached the church at the end of the 18th century. The congregation had to dig their way into the church to attend services. The struggle against the sand continued until 1795 when the church was closed by royal decree. Today, only the steeple of this ancient church remains visible.
Continue north to Grenen, also known as Skagens Odde. This is where the North and Baltic Seas converge, and you can experience standing with one foot in each sea. A tractor-pulled trolley will take you along the last stretch out to the very tip of Denmark and of the European continent. A gateway as well as a land's end, this area attracts more than amillion visitors every year. Enjoy the beautiful scenery here before returning to the pier.
