Leaving Portree's harbor behind you, take in the expansive vistas of Skye that soon open up from the coach. The road to the village of Sconser snakes along the shoreline beneath towering scree slopes.
Across the water from Skye lies the quiet Isle of Raasay. With a modest population and its own school, this 14-mile-long island is a bastion of the Gaelic language and is surrounded by channels up to 950 feet deep. A three-mile ferry journey takes you across fast-flowing narrows with magnificent views in all directions.
Walk from the ferry landing up a gentle slope to the Isle of Raasay Distillery. A warm welcome awaits you, and you'll take a guided tour of the whisky-making facility, whose mineral-rich water is drawn from an ancient Celtic well on the premises. Learn what prompted a dedicated, expert team of master distillers to escape to this remote location and become Scotland's latest proud producers of this peaty spirit. Taste a dram of single malt whisky, which will be bottled on site once the maturation process is completed. Stepping outside, appreciate the jaw-dropping view of the Cuillin mountains laid out before you.
Return on foot to the ferry and head back to Skye. As you head back to Portree, you'll stop (traffic permitting) to take in the view at beautiful Sligachan Glen before reaching the pier.
