The tranquil countryside of Dorset accompanies you en route to the village of Corfe. From the time when dinosaurs roamed the area right up to the modern day, nearly all periods of history are celebrated in and around the village -- a virtual time machine unequaled in the UK.
Visit the thousand-year-old ruins of Corfe Castle, majestically silhouetted against the skyline. One of Britain's most romantic ruins, Corfe's beautiful medieval architecture dominates a breach in the Purbeck Hills. Edward, the Saxon boy king, was murdered here in AD 978, and King John kept important prisoners and valuable treasures in the towers.
As you explore the picturesque remains of the 'very fair castle,' you are following in the footsteps of kings, knights, soldiers, workmen, servants and prisoners -- the hundreds of thousands of people who have lived at, worked in, fought for or visited Corfe Castle during its 1,000-year history. As you take in the splendor of the ruins, it is easy to appreciate that its strategic position was worthy of a lavish and 'modern' royal castle for William the Conqueror and his royal successors.
You will also have some brief free time to wander about the village of Corfe before commencing the return drive across the countryside to Portland.
Notes:
Coaches park in the village of Corfe; from there, it is a pleasant uphill walk to the castle. Terrain includes some fairly steep inclines. Wear comfortable walking shoes.
