As you head away from Cobh, the landscapes, history and character of East Cork unfold mile by mile. Pass through Garryvoe on a scenic stretch of roadway.
Your journey continues to Youghal — a town that feels wonderfully steeped in time. The striking Clock Gate Tower, standing watch since the 17th century, marks the entrance to this historic walled town, while St Mary's Collegiate Church, dating back to the 13th century, reveals centuries of craftsmanship and heritage within its ancient walls.
Youghal's maritime story is quite compelling — its once-bustling port is said to have inspired Herman Melville's Moby Dick, and in earlier centuries, pirates and privateers were no strangers to the town. Youghal is also believed to be the first place in Ireland where the humble potato was first planted, brought here by Sir Walter Raleigh. Take time to wander among the medieval streets, admire the architecture, and absorb the history that lingers at every turn.
Returning to the ship, the route leads through Castlemartyr, where gentle countryside and village charm provide a peaceful contrast, and Midleton, a lively town renowned for its famous distillery.
Notes:
Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars.
