Here's an opportunity to come face-to-face with the crowning glory of Norway's scenic landscape -- beautiful Briksdal Glacier. For more than 100 years, the farmers in Oldedalen transported visitors from the Briksdal Inn to the National Park by horse and carriage. Today, the horse and carriage has been replaced with a rather interesting open-air, open-sided troll car.
Travel by coach through numerous tunnels to the beautiful Olden Valley with its majestic mountains, glacial tongues, waterfalls and green Olden Lake. Your destination is the Briksdal Inn, where you'll transfer to a troll car with low-back bench seating for the remainder of the journey.
Briksdal Glacier, located in Jostedalsbreen National Park, is part of the Jostedal Glacier Icefield -- the largest glacier on the European mainland. This massive glacier flows 4,000 feet down the mountainside into the Briksdal Valley. Your troll car drops you off at the entrance to the National Park. From there, walk approximately 550 yards for a closer look and time to admire the glacier and photograph its many shades of blue and turquoise.
Back in the troll car, return to the Briksdal Inn. Refreshments of coffee, tea and cakes are served here, and there's time to browse for souvenirs before boarding the coach back to Olden.
Notes:
The troll car is a customized utility vehicle seating 6 - 7 guests. A high step up is required to access the vehicle. The walk from the troll car parking point to the glacier takes approximately 15 minutes. Terrain includes steep inclines, uneven surfaces and steps. The troll car is not covered. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Dress warmly in layered clothing with gloves, a scarf, and a hat; outer layer should be windproof and waterproof. Bring bottled water. The glacier is not visible from the refreshment venue.
