Steep mountains tower above the villages of the Olden region, making them some of the most idyllic towns in western Norway. During the summer months, the nearby Briksdal Glacier is one of the most visited places in the country.
Set out from the village center on a scenic drive through the valley, following the shoreline Olden Lake to the pretty town of Rustoen. You will head into the Olden Valley from here, passing small farms, numerous waterfalls and the glorious Melkevoll Glacier.
The road ascends through woodland scenery to the Briksdal Inn at the end of the road. Leave your coach here and hike for about 45 minutes through the lovely landscapes of this picturesque area. Your destination is the magnificent Briksdal Glacier, which is situated in Jostedalsbreen National Park and flows more than 3,937 feet down the mountainside into the valley of the same name. Crossing the river, you'll climb the scenic switchback path to the top of a waterfall for a fantastic view of this arm of the larger Jostedals Glacier. The first part of the trek is somewhat steep, but it flattens out (the terrain remains uneven) as you reach the Briksdal Glacier itself. Spend a brief amount of time here taking in this natural wonderland.
Hike the same route back to the Briksdal Inn for a well-deserved snack of coffee and pastries.
Notes: Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes or hiking boots. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. The hike is strenuous -- 45 minutes each way on steep terrain. Minimum age is 6 years.
